Basic principles of Risk management

Before carrying out any work on an electrical installation, a documented assessment of the electrical risks shall be made. This assessment shall specify what safety measures and precautions are to be implemented to ensure safety.

The standard ISO 31000 Risks management specifies a risk management process. The principal ideas are outlined below.

Identify risks

Identify all hazards which may have an impact on the work or the work location.

Assess risks

Determine whether the identified risks need to be acted upon or not. Consider the likelihood of the risk occurring and the consequence. Prioritize risks with high likelihood and severe consequences.

Control risks

Decide what risks to act upon and what to do about them.

Consider the possibility to:

  • Eliminate the hazard
  • Decrease the probability that the hazard will occur
  • Decrease the consequences if the risk would materialize

Documented risk management shall be carried out when planning and performing the work activity.
