Working in the vicinity of live parts means work where a worker, a machine, equipment or tools enter, or risk coming into, the vicinity zone without reaching the live working zone. Safety measures must be applied to assure that the work can be performed in a safe way.

The following safety measure can be taken, to ensure the worker, tools, and equipment stay outside the live working zone:
- Protection by safety screen
- Protection by safety barrier
- Protection by safety distance and supervision
Before commencement of work, the PCWA shall instruct personnel, particularly those who are not familiar with working in the vicinity of live parts, on the maintenance of safety distances, on the safety measures that have been put into force and on the need for continual awareness of safety at all time. These instructions shall be repeated at suitable periods and after eventual changes of the working conditions.
When the nominal voltages are above 50 V AC or 120 V DC, safety measures shall ensure that live parts cannot be touched, or the live working zone cannot be reached.
When working near a part with an automatic reclosing system, the automatic reclosing system shall always be out of operation during the time work is going on.
